Legends in the Making: Maps for 2020s and Beyond

Maps have always helped us make sense of the world—navigating the critical and the everyday, the physical and the human. Today, maps are more relevant than ever, whether revealing the impacts of climate change, supporting humanitarian action, or simply offering a digital window on the world in our pockets. We need maps that inform, guide, and inspire—across media, across contexts, and across communities.

Join us for the fourth State of New Zealand Cartography seminar, a full-day event exploring the maps we make now and those we need for the future. Following our 2023 event, this biennial seminar welcomes perspectives from across the cartographic and geospatial community: maps, other visual geographic representations, and processes that lead to these maps, such as cartographic design, data management or GIS-based spatial analysis. Talks can focus on the local, national and everyday, through to issues of global significance.

Call for Contributions
We invite short proposals for seminar presentations. Please submit a title and brief abstract (up to 300 words) by Friday, 30 May 2025. If selected, presenters will also be invited to contribute to a post-event publication (at least one page with quality visuals) by Friday, 1 August 2025.

• Location: Hunter Council Chamber (Room HU204 - entry via the Hunter Courtyard), Kelburn campus, Victoria University of Wellington
• Registration: Free (morning and afternoon tea provided; lunch at participants’ own arrangement)
