Welcome to The Joy of Mapping
A Map Design Workshop presented by the NZ Cartographic Society
The New Zealand Cartographic Society / Te Rōpū Tuhi Whenua o Aotearoa is proud to present a map design workshop to be held at Victoria University of Wellington on 24-25 August 2026.
MDW'2026: The Joy of Mapping is designed for anyone wanting to explore techniques for terrain visualization, feature symbology, and layout composition...with a focus on the fun of it all!.
Note: this course will be held in a computer lab with pre-installed access to ArcGIS Pro. Attendees do not need to bring their own device to participate.
REGISTRATION OPENING SOON
Overview
This workshop will guide participants in exploring techniques for terrain visualization, feature symbology, and layout composition.
Using ArcGIS Pro, participants will learn how to apply these methods to create a map while examining the reasoning behind our design choices and how they translate to other projects. These ideas will then be extended into the interactive environment of ArcGIS Online, focusing on multi-scale cartography, clear information hierarchies, and compelling storytelling.
Although ArcGIS serves as the platform, the goal is to emphasize principles that apply broadly across cartography. Throughout the course, demonstrations and visual examples will keep things practical, varied, and engaging.
Skill Level
A basic knowledge of cartography and some experience with ArcGIS will be advantageous, but is not necessary to participate.
Workshop Presenter

John specialises in creating fringe geographic data, curious web experiences, marginally educational blogs, and debatably instructional videos. He works in a small woodshed in Michigan, USA, and relishes the opportunity to chat with other map folks.
