Welcome to Cartographic Feedback
A MDW'2024 workshop presented by the NZ Cartographic Society
NZCS is proud to present a map design workshop to be held at Victoria University of Wellington on 20 August 2024.
MDW'2024: Cartographic Feedback is designed for anyone wanting to explore new ideas and tips and tricks to take their cartography to the next level. The workshop will focus on evaluating and critiquing maps created by workshop participants. Under the guidance of an expert cartographer, participants will collaborate as a group to examine the strengths and weaknesses of each shared map, and discover insights into improving map design.
Each participant must bring a digital or paper map to share (maps in progress are fine). Those bringing printed maps should bring sufficient copies for all in attendance (number to be confirmed).
Note: this course is bring your own device. Access to the internet will be provided but participants need to bring a laptop and mouse if desired.
Overview
This workshop will guide participants in examining how they approach map critique, both individually and through group discussion. This insight will then be directed towards exploring, evaluating, and critically studying each of the maps brought by those in attendance. Each participant will leave with valuable feedback on both the strengths of their work, and ways they can improve.
Engaging in a session of show-and-tell is one of the best ways to grow as a cartographer. In examining each other's maps, we discover new style ideas and learn about useful data sources. When we show off our own maps, friends and colleagues can help us work through places where we often become stuck, and suggest new and exciting directions to explore. The workshop will also feature ideas on how to create supportive environments for ongoing assessment and feedback.
Skill Level
General knowledge of cartography and some experience with map design is expected. All participants must bring a map of their own creation to share and discuss with the group. A curious mind and desire to improve cartographic skills is absolutely required.
Workshop Presenter
Cartography for Daniel is a vocation, a bulwark against depression and anxiety, and an opportunity to write love songs to places they've never been. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, Daniel creates videos, tutorials, and other presentations geared toward demystifying not only the technical processes of cartography, but also its less-often-discussed emotional processes.
Daniel P. Huffman - Freelance Cartographer
Daniel delights in the culture of sharing that permeates the cartographic community, where we are all both teachers and learners. Their tutorials, videos, and conference presentations are usually geared toward demystifying not only the technical processes of cartography, but also its less-often-discussed emotional processes. You can find more of Daniel's work at https://somethingaboutmaps.com.
