NZCS is proud to host the New Zealand Children's Map Competition

Competition Objectives

The objectives of the competition are to promote children’s creative representation of the world, to enhance their cartographic awareness, and to make them more conscious of their environment.

The 1st place winners in each age category (13-15yrs, 9-12yrs, 6-8yrs, under 6 years) will be New Zealand’s entries for the international Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map Competition 2019. This competition will be held in conjunction with the International Cartographic Conference in Tokyo, Japan, 15-20 July 2019.

The theme for 2019 is: We Love Maps

Entry deadline: 22 March 2019

Age Categories

  • 13-15 years
  • 9-12 years
  • 6-8 years
  • under 6 years

Judging Criteria

  • A recognizable message
  • Cartographic content
  • Quality of execution


  • Sponsor prizes for 1st / 2nd / 3rd in each category
  • All 1st place winners receive a custom map for their school
  • Winning entries will be submitted to the 2019 international competition

2017 International Winners

Two New Zealand entries from our 2017 competition won 2nd place in the 13-15 years category and co-won the Creativity prize at the 2017 International Children’s Map Competition in Washington, D.C.  The winning students were from Tauranga Girls' College in Tauranga and Bishop Viard College in Porirua.
