New Zealand Children's World Map Competition 2017 Winners
Thanks to all of the students who entered the New Zealand Children’s Map Competition 2017. We received over 250 entries and the judges awarded First, Second, and Third Place prizes in three age categories. First and Second Place winning maps will represent New Zealand at the international Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map Competition.

45th ANZMapS Conference
The 45th conference of the Australian & New Zealand Map Society (ANZMapS) will be held 22-23 May 2017 in the CBD and at the University of Melbourne.
Registration is now open for Mastering Maps. This event will be an affordable hands-on and scholarly experience, with one day of practicals and one for presentations/papers.
Map Design with ArcGIS ("Compelling Cartography") workshop
NZCS is privileged to host its 2016 Map Design with ArcGIS workshop, delivered by leading cartographer Kenneth Field (ESRI Inc. - USA).
This is a continuation of the very successful MDW workshops held over the past several years. The workshop will precede GeoCart'2016 and will be hosted at Victoria University of Wellington on August 29 and 30.

New Zealand Children's World Map Competition 2015 Winners
Thanks to all of the students who entered the New Zealand Children’s Map Competition 2015. We had over 60 entries and the judges chose six maps to represent New Zealand at the International Barbara Petchenik World Map Competition.
NeoCartography: Citizen Cartographers, GPS, Consumer Electronics, and Mapping
The NZ National School of Surveying and NZCS are proud to present a special seminar by Prof. William Cartwright of RMIT University, Melbourne. Rare Book Summer School 2015: Free public lectures
As part of the Australasian Rare Book Summer School, two free public lectures will be held in Wellington in January 2015, hosted by Victoria University of Wellington and the Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library of New Zealand.

Announcing the 2015 Barbara Petchenik Children's World Map Competition
The Barbara Petchenik Award was created by the International Cartographic Association in 1993 as a memorial for Barbara Petchenik, a past Vice president of the ICA and cartographer who worked through her life with maps related to children. The aim of the contest is to promote the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children.
NZCS is proud to host the New Zealand competition again. Registrations for 2015 are now open.
GeoExpo and NZCS Map Award at GeoCart'2014
Two events associated with the upcoming GeoCart'2014 conference have been announced: GeoExpo'2014 and the New Zealand Cartographic Society Map Award. Potential commercial and other exhibitors are encouraged to participate in these events. Some bookings have already been made, so visit the website to check out who is coming (including a floor plan).
NZCS welcomes any map or cartographic product produced or published after June 30, 2013 to be considered for the NZCS Map Award. Submissions are due by August 22, 2014.

This is a follow on to the successful 2012 Map Design workshop on thematic cartography. The workshop will precede GeoCart'2014 and will be hosted at the University of Auckland on September 1 and 2.

2013 NZCS Biennial General Meeting (BGM)
The Biennial General Meeting was successfully held on February 18, 2013. There were reports on the previous period, amendments to rules and the Society constitution, and a new committee was elected.

GeoCart'2012 and ICA Mountain Cartography wrap-up
Three major NZCS and ICA-related conferences and workshops were held in August and September of this year: GeoCart'2012, the Thematic Map Design workshop (preceding GeoCart), and the ICA Mountain Cartography Workshop. All were successful events.
Please refer to Cartogram 73 for reports and some photos from the events. The ICA Commission on Mountain Cartography website also has a report and other materials from the workshop held at Taurewa, Tongariro National Park. A post-workshop collection of papers is to be published in 2013.
Map Design with ArcGIS ("Thematic Mapping") workshop
NZCS is privileged to host the Map Design with ArcGIS workshop, delivered by leading cartographers Kenneth Field (ESRI USA), Aileen Buckley (ESRI USA), and Igor Drecki (University of Auckland).
This is a follow on to the successful 2010 Map Design workshop. The workshop will precede GeoCart'2012 and will be hosted at the University of Auckland on August 27 and 28.

GeoCart'2012 and ICA Mountain Cartography Workshop
The sixth National Cartographic Conference, GeoCart'2012, and second ICA Symposium on Cartography for Australasia and Oceania will be hosted at The University of Auckland (New Zealand) on August 29-31, 2012.
Also the 8th ICA Mountain Cartography Workshop, will be held at Tongariro National Park (NZ), September 1-5, 2012.
Registration is now open for both events.

NZCS 40th Anniversary: "Celebrating New Zealand Mapping"
In celebration of 40 years as a society (1971-2011), NZCS hosted a gathering at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor in Wellington on Saturday, February 19, 2011.
The fifth National Cartographic Conference, GeoCart'2010, and the first ICA Symposium on Cartography for Australasia and Oceania was hosted at The University of Auckland (New Zealand) on September 1-3, 2010.
The Conference was endorsed by the International Cartographic Association (ICA).
